1. Respect is an easy skill to teach. Unfortunately, it has fallen by the wayside in too many households today. Parents drop the ball at two different parts of this education for their kids. First, they allow their child to be disrespectful to family members. If parents fail to stop and correct any disrespectful behavior it is going to continue - AND GET WORSE! The second area parents drop the ball is they model disrespect. The use of sarcasm and put downs as a form of communication is terrible and should never be used with or even around your child. Give your child the respect they deserve and model respectful behavior and watch your child follow suit.
2. Self-Confidence is the most valuable skill you can teach your child. With self-confidence, they will be prepared to deal with any number of challenges they run into in their lifetime. With self-confidence, your child will be able to face his fears head on instead of hiding from them. He will have a strong sense of right and wrong and will not bend to the will of others just to be popular. Give your child the self-confidence they need by becoming their biggest cheerleader. Point out their victories and strengths on a regular basis. Too often, parents criticize their child’s actions and forget to praise. Try for a 3 to 1 ratio - 3 positive statements for every 1 negative one.
4. Goal Setting is a skill that is completely absent from our education system but is critical to your child’s success. It is amazing how many teachers, counselors, principals, and even parents EXPECT goal setting skills from a child, but never try to TEACH it to them. Until the age of 12, children are “present minded”. That means the only thing that matters to them is what is right in front of them. Difficult to set a goal with this type of thinking, but once you realize that, you can start to change it. Karate Classes for Kids uses the belt system to teach goal setting with great success. Kids learn to work for the next belt rank so they can learn better and cooler moves. Teach your child to set goals by using this same method.
5. Leadership is becoming the most valuable skill that kids learn. Good leaders are able to take control of their life and get things done. Great leaders take it even further by being able to help others achieve success and happiness in their own lives. Teaching leadership to your child is a great investment in their future. Karate Classes for Kids accomplishes this by using a Project Based Leadership Model for students. Kids find a community service they would like to perform, put together an action plan, organize a team, complete the project, and then write a report on their experience. This model touches on all of the bases of leadership AND gets the kids involved so they tend to remember the lesson a lot more than a lecture or story. Find a community service your child would like to perform, and see how they learn from the experience.
Isn't it about time that you give your child the tools they need to be successful in life?
